The Challenge
Whiteley Village — the original outlet centre — had struggled to compete and was ultimately demolished. Despite the redevelopment, legacy perceptions remained.
The challenge was twofold:
• Reintroduce Whiteley as a contemporary destination for both shoppers and the local community
• Create a distinctive, flexible brand that could cut through a crowded retail landscape and remain relevant long after launch
This required more than a campaign. It needed a clear idea, a cohesive identity and a system that could work across multiple channels, audiences and moments.
The Approach
We developed a highly ownable creative platform built around playful “–ly” wordplay — a simple but powerful device that delivered personality, memorability and long-term flexibility.
This became the foundation for the brand.
Rather than separating identity and campaign, the platform shaped both simultaneously — influencing typography, tone of voice and visual expression from the outset. Bold typographic treatments, expressive illustration and a confident use of language created a distinctive and recognisable world for Whiteley.
The strapline “Reassuringly Whiteley” anchored the idea, rebuilding trust while signalling a step-change in the offer.
Importantly, the system was designed to flex — working across categories, seasonal activity and ongoing retail promotion without losing consistency or impact.
